Briarwood gardens - agritourism with a twist
Briarwood Gardens Annual Gardening Weekend
Sat. May 23rd 11-4   Sun. May 24 1-5
Each year we open our gardens for people to come explore and buy herbs and heirloom plants, heirloom seeds, and herb products, and my jewelry, Earth's Creations. Come and learn how to garden without a tiller or plow. Experience raised bed gardening. We want you to look and use our old and new tools that will make your gardening easier and your soil better. And everyone is invited to bring a lawn chair and sit a spell while we talk about Organic Gardening for Beginners and Recipes from the Gardens. We hope that they will take some idea or plant home with them and learn to embrace the organic lifestyle. For directions and the rest of Denise's story...

Fallen Blossoms and the Ghosts of Crowley Corner
Fallen Blossoms and the Ghosts of Crowley Corner
Rushing against a fast approaching deadline for the paper, I pulled the car into a tight curve and swung around stopping just short of the Highway 2208 sign at Crowley Corner. To most travelers along Highway 58 going into Clinton or headed the other way to Mayfield, this small intersection held nothing special.
However, for some of us mortals, there were special memories that lingered each time we drove through this part of Hickman County. Like today, bitter April chilled wind pulled at my warmth, until I pushed the scarf into a tight fit around my neck. Moving from the parked car, I headed for my target.
Unlike most years, a unique blend of large azaleas, red buds, and tulip blossoms were dancing in the wind each day at a high yard overlooking the road. But this year’s flowers were in trouble. The ice storm had wrought a very cruel pronouncement of a brilliant death sentence for the flowers and trees.

Home Built With "Green Power" Debuts in River Counties
Building a Green Home
Just because you want a house that echoes historic design approaches doesn’t mean that you must give up having a house that is green and sustainable. Our architect has just designed a prairie style green house for us in Clinton KY. The building is now completed and we have settled in.

Why build green? It can be a stickler of a question. We could discuss carbon footprint, energy independence, and global warming.   Those are great subjects. However, they were not the reasons why my wife and I chose to build a green home.

Ice Storm 2009: Birth of a Community Shelter
Total darkness greeted people looking out their windows. For many of Clinton’s citizens, this would be the opening chapter of living through their longest day in many a winter. This day that, for me, would last from 10:10 p.m. on January 26, 2009 through till 10 minutes till 10:00 p.m. on February 4, 2009. For most people caught up in trying to survive the ravages of the storm, this day would exist over 240 hours, as normal days and nights merged into a single bad memory of cold darkness, coping with hunger, seeking fuel for lamps or gas for generators or propane for heaters.

Ice Storm 2009: Birth of a Community Shelter
The ice storm struck Clinton, Ky. with full force at 10:10 p.m. That was the precise time all my power and lights cease to exist. An eerier softness descended upon the small town. The only sounds heard was the impact of rain and ice hitting the streets and buildings.

Pecans the stuff legends are made of
I was transfixed with desire. Gorge myself or just admire the beauty in front of me. What a problem.

I was snapped out of my dilemma, as I watched a single slice of strawberry slide over the edge of the highest piece of toast, dragging with it a big pecan.

The pecan was from Kentucky Kernel of Hickman, Kentucky, “The Stuff of Legends.”
